Following the publication of The Afterlife of Flowers in 1999, Running Press (publisher) received a call from Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia about Janie teaching Martha how to microwave flowers. The call resulted in Janie’s television appearance, which required a two-day trip to Martha’s famous Turkey Hill home and film studio in Westport, Connecticut. Janie invited her two daughters, Toby (who was home from college) and Julie (who was in middle school), to accompany her on the adventure.

On day 1, Janie gathered flowers from Martha’s garden for use in the live TV demonstration. Day 2 consisted of Janie’s help with art direction and the taping of her “live” appearance. Then, that same day, somebody informed her that Martha would appear and on-air shooting would begin simultaneously. In other words, Janie met Martha on air for the first time, and shooting began without a rehearsal. Janie is mentioned on the Martha Stewart website.

Almost 18 years later, you can still read more in Philadelphia Magazine.
